You asked, and we answered
The MusicSketch app helps songwriters and musicians of all levels capture and develop music ideas on their Apple iPhone or iPad. We aim to provide an experience that makes it simple to create, refine, and share musical ideas. Our current release supports seamless collaboration with easy file sharing so multiple users can work together on a lead sheet or score. MusicSketch now supports both Lyrics with Chords and full Scores with melody and bass lines. All lead-sheet tools are designed for fast, intuitive entry—whether typing lyrics, adding chords, or drafting notation.
The updated Audio Mixer lets you build a backing band based on your chord changes and mix everything in high-definition audio using our curated instruments. While MusicSketch is not a full desktop publishing system, we believe the speed, simplicity, and accessibility more than compensate. We welcome user feedback and will continue innovating while keeping the platform clean and easy to use so creators can stay focused on their ideas.
We are interested in helping songwriters and musicians of all levels capture and refine their music ideas on the go and on their iPhone or iPad.
We designed MusicSketch® to make it easy to iterate on a music ideas: audition chord changes, quickly iterate on a melody, try a bassline, and all in hi def audio.
You do not need to know notation to use MusicSketch. You can capture lyrics, add chord changes, and layer rhythms or drum loops using the included accompaniments. Basic notation knowledge helps when creating scores, but MusicSketch provides simple notation tools. You can add chord changes, backing tracks, and explore melodies using the keyboard or DiBo!, while MusicSketch handles the notational details.
The Music Sketch app is free. The World needs more music!
Your songs reside on your iPhone or iPad and your iCloud account, and are not accessible by others unless you explicitly share those songs.
Please refer to the Privacy Policy section in Settings.
MusicSketch® is for capturing music ideas on the go, experimenting with new chord changes, creating bassline ideas, and quickly iterating on a new melody. You can create a lead sheet or even a complete song with MusicSketch®. However, while we support composition in two staves for piano sheet music, we currently do not support extra symbols such as dynamics, sustain markers, percussion notation and more. We do, however, support the common notation found in lead sheets.
MusicSketch is an integrated suite of songwriting tools allowing novice as well as advanced users the ability to work on song ideas on their iPhone or iPad. We have easy to use tools for entering lyrics, voicing chord changes, writing a melody, creating a bass line, testing out a beat, and voicing guitar charts. MusicSketch supports all of these capabilities and tightly integrates them into a cohesive song. Our suite makes it easy to get started, and easy to collaborate with others.
Songs can begin with lyrics, chords, melodies, bass lines, or drum loops all supported in MusicSketch. The easiest method is to use a Template: long press any Template to load it and begin adding lyrics or chords. Otherwise, select Create a New Song, choose Lyrics or Score, and start composing.
Anyone who wants to capture and refine song ideas, as well as collaborate with others, is a candidate to use the MusicSketch app. Songwriters can work on lyrics and chord changes; musicians can write melody and bass lines; teachers can create and share lessons with students; and bands can arrange and share songs.
Open MusicSketch, name your song, choose a key, and then start typing your lyrics — It’s that easy! In addition, you can add chords to lyrics and playback your song using our audio mixer with hi-def instruments.

Lyrics always start with a single Verse but you can use the (+) plus button to add additional lyrics verse blocks which are easy to rename.
MusicSketch does not directly generate AI content, but Apple’s writing tools are available in the Lyrics text editor.
Our hope is that songwriters and musicians will use MusicSketch to explore new ideas and find opportunities to work with others on their music. We make it easy to create and audition ideas. And because it is so easy to explore musical ideas with MusicSketch, we hope that users learn along the way. Spend time creating music.
There are many ways to create and write music, and at MusicSketch we want to help you get started. Creating music is fun, and the world always needs more music!
While MusicSketch supports iCloud storage, MusicSketch is a creative tool, not a data storage center. Please backup your songs and ideas by using iCloud Drive or any other service regularly
Tap a button on the DiBo!™ or a key on the keyboard in the selected stave.
The DiBo!™ supports 25 notes in either stave plus their flats and sharps.
Long press the DiBo! button for a note and choose the accidental. Single/double flats, sharps, and naturals are supported.

Tap – or + on the Duration button. A range from 1/32 notes to whole notes is supported. The same range is found in most lead sheets.

There are two ways to generate a tie: select a note or chord and then tap the Tie button to create a tie with automatically-generated notes or chords; or alternatively, tap the Tie button on a note or chord to generate a tie between similar notes on the next chord.

The beams of a run are automatically generated between notes or chords of less than a quarter-note duration within a measure.
Select a note or chord with a quarter note or less duration, and then tap the Triplet button. Each note of the triplet can then be edited and rests can also be applied.

While editing a measure swipe down on the handle at the top of the instrument editor to show both staves of the Piano Score format. Tapping on either stave in this format will return the editor in the selected clef. By collapsing the editor, you are able to listen to both staves without having to return to the song screen.
Tap the small note buttons above and below the DiBo!™, or swipe up and down to extend the range of accessible notes. These buttons have the same properties as the main notes in the DiBo!™

Long press the selected piano key and choose an accidental.
A repeated section needs a starting and ending measure to define its range. If no start repeat is given, then the repeat goes from the first measure. Endings are used to define multiple ways that a repeat can finish.
Long press on a measure and select “Add New Repeat” from the contextual menu. The measure you selected is automatically used as the trailing repeat.

Long press on a measure within a repeated set of measures and select Remove Repeat from the contextual menu.
A: Chords follow the voicing on the selected guitar chart whenever possible. In the case of chords that do not have a chart, the pitches from the chord are played in an arrangement similar to how a guitarist might play them. In complex chords, the 5th and major 3rd may be excluded from playback.
Chord voicing may vary depending on the chord playback pattern you have selected. Chord playback options marked with a chart icon will include all tones from your chord. Chord playback options that are not marked with the chart icon only play a subset of tones and may not cover all the notes in more complex chords.
Chord voicing may vary depending on the bass line you have selected. Bass line options marked with a chart icon will best match your chord and will follow your slash note. Bass line options that are not marked with a chart icon only play a subset of tones and may not cover all the notes in more complex chords.
Visual chord charts are available for commonly used chords, but are not available for certain more detailed chords and slash combinations. In playback, the true chord pitches and the slash note will be played, even if a chart visual is not available.
Tap the Chords button while editing a measure, select a chord location represented by the grey dots above the measure (these are placed on the beat locations) and then select one of the SUGGESTED or CUSTOM chords. Each time you change a chord, it will play, allowing you to audition the chord you are creating.
While editing a measure select Chords, tap on the purple + button in the CUSTOM section and the chord builder keyboard will pop up. Then select the tonic of the new chord and add the quality, extensions, and altered notes as needed. The sound of the new chord will be auditioned as the chord is constructed. To change the sound, select a different instrument in CHORDS track of the mixer.
After creating a 7th chord in the custom chord builder, the first of the Add Ext. buttons will be enabled. Tap on that button to add an extension. A second extension will then be enabled.
A majority of chords in lead sheets have only two extensions.
The most commonly used chords in the major or minor key.
Select Create a New Song, choose Score, enter a title, select a key, and press Create. The default is a piano score (treble and bass clefs), but in Song Settings you can switch to a lead sheet or Bass Chart.
Select Song Settings and tap the desired format option at the top of the screen. MusicSketch® will keep the music notation consistent between formats.
These are either the G or F clef staves of a song.
Slashes are placeholders on the beat within a measure. The DiBo!™ and keyboard can overwrite the slashes with music notation.

The Chord Timing interface displays chord progressions with measures, bar lines, and beat markers. Chords can be placed on beats and dragged between beats or measures. The interface prevents unwanted rearrangements and is a fast way to audition progressions.
The Chord Timing interface is only for timing chords in existing verses. If you want to add another verse you must exit Chord Timing, and add a verse through the main lyrics screen
You can insert a new empty measure by tapping the purple plus (+) button. You can remove an empty measure with the red minus (-) button that is beneath the measure you want to remove. The minus button is only enabled if there are no chords in the measure. If you do not see the plus (+) or minus (-) buttons, try dismissing the chord library.
First, tap the chord you want to remove. You should now see it highlighted in the Chord Library at the bottom of the screen. Then, tap the red delete (-) button.
First, select one of the gray chord dots where you want to add your new chord. You can then select an existing chord from the chord library at the bottom of the screen. If the chord library does not contain the chord you want, press the purple plus button in the library to build a new chord. Once you have built your new chord, remember to press the purple checkmark button to add it to the chord library. You will then be able to add your new chord to the Chord Timing interface.

Since you can only delete empty measures in Chord Timing, first delete all chords from the measure. The delete measure button should then become red, indicating the measure can be deleted.
MusicSketch® worked closely with Q Up Arts to create a custom suite of hi def instruments on the iPhone or iPad for songwriters and musicians. Each instrument and drum loop has been optimized to provide great sound.
Tap the Play button in the navigation bar or within the Lyrics or Score editors.

You can scroll to any point in your song, and begin playback from there by pressing the play button. Playback will start from the first measure at the top of your screen.
When editing a measure tap the Play button to audition the music shown in that measure. Further playback options are available by long pressing the Play button.
Loop Mode is available in Song view and is activated by the Loop button in the navigation bar. Tap the Loop button to enter loop mode, and then select any note or rest to define the beginning of a range of notes; then tap a second note to complete the loop. The selected range of notes will be highlighted. To redefine this range, tap a new note or rest and restart the process. To exit loop mode, toggle the Loop button.

Tap the Menu button → Audio Mixer. Adjust volume and reverb per track. Activate a track by choosing a style, selecting an instrument, and setting levels. Preview using Play and press Save to store your mix. Press Reset to restore the original settings useful when multiple sections have unique mixes.

The DRUMS track offers MIDI drum loops. The default is None until a loop is selected. Disable by selecting None. Loops use various kits and cannot be edited.
The CHORDS track provides rhythm loops tied to your chord changes. The default is None. Disable by selecting None. Patterns cannot be edited, but high-def instruments are available.
The BASSLINE track offers bass loops tied to your chord changes. The default is None. Disable by selecting None. Patterns cannot be edited, and high-def instruments are provided.
Each track in the Audio Mixer has associated instruments. In the TREBLE STAFF and BASS STAFF tracks simply tap the Instrument menu and choose a high def Instrument from the menu list. In these tracks the default instrument is Soft Piano. In the DRUMS, CHORDS, and BASSLINE tracks first select the loop or rhythm and then select an instrument; with these three tracks the default is None.
As long as you have space in the measure, select a note or chord and press the checkmark button to insert a new note after it. You cannot insert notes in between ties or triplets. If there is no space in the measure, pressing the checkmark will take you to the next note or chord.
Yes, you can copy lyrics and chords between songs as long as the songs share the same time signature. The pasted chords will automatically be transposed into the new key.
Normally you tap the accept (checkmark) button to advance to the next time point. However, if there is still room available in a measure, you can TAP and HOLD the accept button to insert notation before the currently selected time point.
Use Song Settings → Share Notes to add comments or track changes.
On Apple platforms, MusicSketch exports songs as a Package. A Package is a special macOS/iPadOS/iOS file type that is a folder that behaves as a single file, safely containing all elements of a MusicSketch song. Packages are ideal inside Apple’s ecosystem because they work smoothly with AirDrop, Messages, Mail, Files, iCloud Drive, and most Apple-native sharing flows. Collaboration also relies on this format, so Packages are the default structure for song documents that you use for editing and collaboration within MusicSketch.
Many non-Apple apps (like Slack, WhatsApp, Gmail, or Windows tools) don’t properly recognize Packages because underneath they’re folders. That can cause songs to upload incorrectly or not at all. To share reliably everywhere, MusicSketch provides an option to share a MusicSketch Archive, which creates a ZIP archive file. ZIP archives, universally supported across platforms, keep the whole song in a single portable file, which imports cleanly into MusicSketch. Note: ZIP archives are meant for sharing or moving songs between devices. They aren’t used for collaboration which requires the Package format.

Use MusicSketch to capture your song ideas anywhere and at any time on your iPhone or iPad. We make it easy to write lyrics and iterate on chord progressions. With our hi-def guitars and keyboards, curated drum loops, and hi-def instruments, it’s like having a rhythm section available whenever you need one. And of course you can share your song, print and publish beautiful lead sheets, or record a video and export to social media. To get started, you might enter a chord progression, select a guitar accompaniment and drum loop, and start writing lyrics.
It is easy to get started. Enter a chord progression, select desired guitar charts, and share with your student. Of course you can also add lyrics. While we do not support TAB today, you can place chords on beats, set tempo, and publish a lead sheet. MusicSketch also generates a live lead sheet, so that the chords can be played back with or without a drum beat. In addition, it is easy to record a lesson with our record video feature.
Rather than write out a melody, bass line, or chord progressions by hand, use MusicSketch to capture the notation. Imagine using the app to enter a chord progression or riff, maybe change the key, or perhaps illustrate a fill, and then record how the piece should be played. It’s easy with MusicSketch because these capabilities are all provided in the app. And because it is so easy to change music in the app, students can later audition their own ideas.
Use MusicSketch to capture a song idea and as a collaboration platform so that band members can easily work together. Bands can also share songs instantly at a gig as well as make changes to a piece of music on the fly. And of course, you can print and publish beautiful lead sheets or record a video.
Use MusicSketch to create a beat: melody, bass line, chord progression or drum loop, and then export the MIDI or audio file to the DAW of your choice. In the DAW adjust the tempo or BPM. Next, in the DAW select the best VST and audition your music.
Information and Help appear wherever you see the (i) icon. The app includes searchable FAQs, video Tutorials, and contextual help on most screens.
It is quick and easy to create a lead sheet with the MusicSketch® app on your iPhone or iPad. Lead sheets can be shared, altered and published all from MusicSketch®.
Today you can collaborate with other musicians by sharing a song from your Songs list in the MusicSketch® format. When another musician imports that song into MusicSketch®, they can listen to it and immediately make changes to their copy. Imagine creating a lead sheet at a gig, making a quick change, and sharing with your bandmates in seconds!

Create a new song or lead sheet with chord changes and then use the Audio Mixer to add and audition drum loops, chord rhythms, and basslines. Also try different instruments and tune the volume and reverb for each track.
The Direct Interface BOard (DiBo!™) is our unique and patent pending tool that makes it easy and fast to enter music notation. The circular buttons on the DiBo!™ map to the staff in either clef. The DiBo!™ currently supports 25 notes in either staff plus accidentals — this range covers most music found in lead sheets while keeping a simple interface on a mobile device.

The MusicSketch keyboard covers 25 notes in each stave, including sharps and flats matching the range of most published lead sheets. Small circles indicate notes in the selected key signature; accidentals outside the key signature are set automatically using common notation rules. Long press any key to manually add or change accidentals, or use the DiBo! for advanced editing by long pressing the selected note.
The Rabbit button activates a note entry mode that immediately advances the staff cursor after entering a note.

Guitar charts are new in v3.0! Tap any chord symbol in Lyrics or Score to display its guitar chart. Charts can also be accessed via the drop-down menu. Charts appear at the top of exported lyric PDFs, and users can choose whether to include them when sharing files.

From the chord menu, tap on the guitar chart adjacent to the chord symbol and then from the pop up of chart inversions, tap to select the best guitar voicing for your song. When tapped, the audio for that chart will play. This is a convenient way to voice charts.
Currently the app only supports a single guitar voicing for each specific chord in a song.
If a guitar is the selected instrument, different chart inversions are available. With all other instruments the app determines a suitable inversion for rhythm playback.
The MusicSketch app does not currently support guitar TAB.
No, not currently.

Yes, just start typing lyrics under the chords. Later the chords can be dragged and placed.
MusicSketch protects the integrity of your music. If you drag a chord to a position that would alter the relative ordering of the chords in your song, MusicSketch moves those chords in order to preserve the ordering of that chord progression as well as maintain sound of your song. When chords are moved, a pop up message will ask if the intent is to move all of the affected chords in a sequence, or just the selected chords.
The app tracks chord sequences and we try to help you maintain those sequences so that your music is not inadvertently altered. When a chord is dragged and moved the pop up will inquire if the intent is to ‘rearrange’ the chord sequence, in which case the selected chord can be moved; or alternatively if ‘Move Affected Chords’ is selected, the entire sequence will move into place. It is a tricky challenge to maintain the integrity of a chord sequence, but we try our best to help keep track of these sequences. But, always make backups just in case your progressions are inadvertently altered.
In order to hear chords first go to the Audio Mixer and in the CHORDS section choose a rhythm. Alternatively turn up the volume!

You can use the < and > buttons on the top section of the chord keyboard to quickly move the chord cursor (a purple dot) between the chords in lyrics. The dot indicator shows where the next chord will be input relative to other chords. The chord position cursor is different than the traditional text cursor.

No, the text cursor is the traditional vertical blinking line where a charter from the keyboard will be placed. The chord cursor, a purple dot, is where the selected chord will be placed.

In the lyrics text field, chords have a gray background when their placement in the text would cause them to collide or overlap with other chords. Instead of overlapping, any conflicting chords are pushed to the right and drawn with a gray background during editing. Insert spaces or drag a chord to the right to position it where it has sufficient spacing from other chords.
